Having survived Ultron's world take over by remaining intangible. Vision acted as Tony's eyes and ears for monitoring the world and keeping track of Ultron progress in taking it over. The reason for his return was due to the fact that Ultron had found a way to defeat his intangible state and wounded him severely. Tony did not have time to repair his body and the children ended up carrying around his head instead.
Having lack of solar power, he was shut down and was incapable of helping the children until he was recharged. He was very surprised when he came back online to discover that he missed the return of the Hulk and the fall of Ultron.
