Kenpachi Kiganjō (鬼厳城 剣八, Kiganjō Kenpachi) was the 10th Kenpachi. A century ago, he was the captain of the 11th Division and the predecessor of Kenpachi Zaraki. Prior to becoming the Kenpachi, Kiganjō's name was Gosuke Kiganjō (鬼厳城 五助, Kiganjō Gosuke).
Appearance[]
Kenpachi Kiganjō was a big man, with a dark complexion, dark hair, and dark eyes. He had two spiked piercings below his lips, and had a very rough appearance, with chipped fingernails, facial hair, and body hair.
Personality[]
Little is known of his personality other than he was quite lazy. Shinji Hirako comments on this when he fails to show up for a captains meeting.
History[]
Just like every other captain of the 11th Division, Kiganjō became the captain and the new "Kenpachi" by killing the previous captain of the 11th Division, the 9th Kenpachi.
When Kiganjō failed to turn up to the captains meeting called to introduce Kisuke Urahara, Shinji Hirako stated Kiganjō was a slacker who, as usual, was not listening to what he was told. Shinji, claiming he was a "pain in the ass", wondered why "such a piggish guy" had been allowed to become a captain. Love Aikawa points out it couldn't be helped, given that the 11th Division is set up differently, and if anyone is to be blamed for Kiganjō's presence among them, it is the previous Kenpachi for dying to Kiganjō.
Kiganjō was not present during the captains meeting which was called to respond to the emergency surrounding the vanishing soul incident when Kensei and Mashiro disappeared.
Later, he was killed by Kenpachi Zaraki in front of 200 members of the 11th Division.
Bount arc (anime only)[]
Note: Events occurring in this arc are only in the anime and do not constitute canon material.
Maki Ichinose mentioned Kiganjō as a man who believed in justice much like himself. Maki was deeply attached to Kiganjō.
Powers and Abilities[]
Master Swordsman: As a former captain of the 11th division, which specializes in swordsmanship, Kiganjō had highly capable skill in this art, enough to kill his predecessor. However, it was not nearly at the level of Kenpachi Zaraki, who took him down in a single strike.
Great Spiritual Power: As a captain of the Gotei 13, Kiganjō possessed a large amount of Reiryoku.
Zanpakutō[]
The handle of Kiganjō's Zanpakutō had a large, black ring inlaid with gold on the end that was roughly the size of his palm. It was attached to the end of the handle, which also had a rim of gold, by a small red sash.
