Hypno (Japanese: スリーパー Sleeper) is a Psychic-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves from Drowzee starting at level 26.

Biology[]

Hypno is a bipedal, slightly humanoid Pokémon that has yellow skin. It has triangular ears with brown interiors, sleepy-looking eyes, and a large nose. On its neck, it has a ruff of white fur, which is longer on the female. Hypno has five fingers on each hand and holds a pendulum in its left. The pendulum resembles a flat, silver ring and is used for hypnotism. Hypno is never seen without it. It has three toes on each foot, which also have a pink pad on the undersides.

Hypno is able to put people to sleep by swinging its pendulum. It is known to reside away from humans and on less-traveled roads. While it awaits its prey, it polishes its pendulum. If anyone comes by, Hypno will hypnotize them and eat their dreams. It carries away people having good dreams and is even known to have stolen a child at one point. However, in the Alola region, it preys primarily on Komala, and cases of Hypno targeting humans are notably rare. Some Hypno are even known to assist doctors in hospitals when their patients cannot sleep at night. In the Trainers' School in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, a Hypno is shown to be capable of creating illusions, namely by disguising itself as a human and causing illusory children to appear.

Major appearances[]

Hypno debuted alongside its pre-evolved counterpart in Hypno's Naptime. The members of HopHopHop Town's Pokémon Lover's Club were using the two of them to help them with their sleeping problems. However, the "Sleep Waves" from Hypno were also causing children to act like Pokémon and draining the energy of Pokémon in the local Pokémon Center. Drowzee eventually managed to fix this problem.

In Playing with Fire!, Harrison used a Hypno during his Silver Conference battle against Ash. It was able to defeat Totodile before losing to Snorlax.

In Fear Factor Phony, a Hypno lived in an abandoned mining colony with other Psychic-types.

In Mission: Total Recall!, Faba first used a Hypno in an attempt to wipe Lillie's memories. Gladion stopped it by defeating it with his Silvally. It made further appearances in Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon.

Minor appearances[]

In The Power of One, a Hypno sensed the disturbance caused by Lawrence III.

In The Psychic Sidekicks!, a Hypno was living in Len Town.

In Beauty and the Breeder, a Pokémon Breeder's Hypno participated in a Pokémon breeding competition.

In Ariados, Amigos, Mickey used a Hypno during his battle with Ralph at the Pokémon Jujitsu Academy. It lost to Houndour.

In Spontaneous Combusken!, a Coordinator's Hypno competed in the Chrysanthemum Island Pokémon Contest.

In Destination: Coronation!, a Trainer's Hypno battled Visquez's Raichu, only to be defeated by his Volt Tackle.

A Trainer's Hypno appeared in This Could be the Start of Something Big!.

Trivia[]

  • Hypno's Red, Blue, LeafGreen, and Scarlet Pokédex entries make reference to it using "PSI moves" (or "psi moves" in Scarlet), possibly indicating an early name for the Psychic type in English.
  • Hypno's numbers in the Alola Pokédex in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon and the Paldea Pokédex are identical: 067 for the former, and 67 for the latter.
  • Hypno are most likely commonly left handed due to always holding their pendulums in their left hand.

Origin[]

Hypno is based on a tapir, hypnotist, and baku, or dream eater spirit, of Japanese mythology. It also looks similar to a proboscis monkey. Aspects of Hypno's behavior also resemble various fairies, goblins, bogeymen, and other supernatural entities in European folklore.

Name origin[]

Hypno may be derived from hypnosis.

Sleeper is literally sleeper.
